What Is Woad and What Colour Does It Make?
Woad (Isatis tinctoria) is a leafy plant from the cabbage family. It grows in temperate regions and is known for producing a soft blue dye from its leaves.
Even though the leaves are green, they contain a hidden colour compound: it makes it so that, when processed correctly, they produce indigotin, the same blue pigment found in the better-known indigo plant.
The blue from woad is often described as lighter or softer than indigo, with a slightly smoky or dusty appearance. It’s subtle, beautiful, and entirely natural.
A Short History of Woad Dye
Woad has been used as a blue dye plant for centuries, particularly in parts of Europe and western Asia. Woad is a biennial plant, which means it grows leaves in the first year and flowers in the second.
Key steps to grow woad:
- Sow the seeds in spring or early summer;
- Choose sunny spots with well-drained soil;
- Harvest leaves during the first year, when they’re full of dye potential.
The dye is extracted from fresh leaves, so they should be processed soon after harvest. The plant is fairly easy to grow and often used in natural dye gardens today.
How the Blue Dye Is Extracted
Turning green leaves into blue dye might seem like magic, but it’s a simple natural process involving water, fermentation, and air, and takes 5 steps:
- Chop the fresh leaves and soak them in warm water.
- Let the mixture ferment to break down the colourless compound called indican.
- Aerate the liquid (by stirring or pouring) to expose it to oxygen. This turns the liquid blue as indigotin forms.
- Collect the blue sediment, which settles at the bottom.
- Create a dye bath, where fabric is dipped and later turns blue when exposed to air.
It’s a living, transforming process – one of the reasons woad dyeing is so fascinating to artists and craftspeople.
